THE HOBART SMITHS

The Hobart Smiths are an acoustic trio from the Coal River Valley who perform a unique blend of acoustic roots and blues music dating back to the nineteen twenties.

The band was formed in 2008 when regular Republic Bar blues soloist, GB Balding, joined forces with Fred Pribac (Coyote SHobart Smithserenade, Toulouse All Stars) on banjo and mandolin, and Rachael Gates (The Cut Outs, The Rusticators) on double bass.

The Hobart Smiths perform a range of weird old Americana from traditional folk ballads through to early blues and jug band classics. "We love playing together," said bassist, Rachael Gates, "Fred loves hillbilly folk music, I like to sing jug band numbers and Gerry is an expert blues fingerpicker and singer; together we have been able to produce a weirdly infectious and distinctive folk-blues sound".
